The ultra-compact, L41home prototype was shown at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. Canada.
Vancouver, with its growing population, land-shortage, high housing costs and homelessness, coupled with City Hall’s advanced Planning and Social philosophies made it an ideal city in which to demonstrate that “Small is Beautiful" which has become a global cry for less conspicuous consumption.
The prototype of the L41home used state-of-the-art building systems and construction techniques, including non-toxic materials, solar-thermal heating and cooling, LED lighting, zinc cladding, green roofs, super windows and cross-ventilation.
The frame of the prototype was constructed of beetle-killed, Cross-laminated Timber, (CLT) a relatively new wood product in North America. The true benefit of CLT is that it is solid wood and can be used as a substitute for concrete in mid-rise buildings. (the British have built 9 stories) When one considers that concrete is responsible for 8% of the world’s carbon emissions, the implications become clear.
